Class 7 MOT Test
MOT – Class 7 in Cheltenham - Shire Cars
At Shire Cars, we offer Class 7 MOT testing in Cheltenham for light goods vehicles and vans. If your van or commercial vehicle is due its annual test, our DVSA-authorised test lane can accommodate vehicles up to 3,500kg design gross weight, with appointments available to minimise disruption to your working day.
A Class 7 MOT is the annual roadworthiness test required by law for light goods vehicles and vans with a design gross weight between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg. Like all MOT tests, it is carried out by a DVSA-authorised tester and confirms that the vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards required for road use in the UK.
Vehicles that require a Class 7 MOT include:
If your vehicle has a design gross weight of 3,000 kg or below, it falls under a Class 4 MOT rather than Class 7. If you are unsure which class applies to your vehicle, the figure is shown on the vehicle’s plate or in the V5C registration document under “Revenue Weight” or “Design Gross Weight”.
The Class 7 test covers the same core safety and emissions items as a Class 4 test, with additional checks relevant to commercial vehicles and load-carrying use. Our tester will inspect:
Since May 2018, MOT results are categorised as Dangerous, Major, Minor or Advisory. A Dangerous or Major failure means the vehicle must not be used on the road until the relevant fault is repaired.
Commercial vehicles are often subject to heavier use than private cars. Before your test, it is worth checking:
A Class 7 MOT typically takes between 45 and 75 minutes depending on the vehicle’s configuration and condition. Larger or more complex vehicles, such as those with additional lighting rigs or specialist bodywork, may take a little longer. We will always let you know of any likely delays.
A Major or Dangerous failure means the vehicle cannot be driven on the road until the identified faults are repaired, other than to drive directly to a pre-arranged repair appointment. We can advise on the work required and, in many cases, carry out repairs at our Cheltenham garage so you can get back on the road quickly.
If the vehicle is retested at our garage within 10 working days of the original test date and only the failed items are retested, a reduced retest fee may apply.
Check the manufacturer’s plate fitted to your vehicle (usually inside the driver’s door frame or in the engine bay) or look at the V5C registration document under “Revenue Weight” or “Design Gross Weight.” If the figure is between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg, you need a Class 7 test. If it is 3,000 kg or below, you need a Class 4 test.
All vehicles, including vans, require their first MOT when they turn three years old. After that, the test must be renewed annually.
Yes, you may drive the vehicle to a pre-booked MOT appointment even if the certificate has lapsed, provided it is not in an obviously dangerous condition. You may not use it for any other purpose until a valid certificate is in place.
You do not need to completely empty the vehicle, but the load area must be accessible so the tester can inspect the floor, load anchorage points and bulkhead. Loose items that could shift during the test should be removed or secured.
No. A Class 7 MOT does not test tachographs, speed limiters, or any operator licence compliance equipment. These are subject to separate regulations and calibration requirements. If your vehicle requires a tachograph inspection, this must be arranged separately with an approved tachograph centre.
Paper certificates are no longer issued automatically. Your result is recorded digitally on the DVSA database and can be checked at any time at check-mot.service.gov.uk. We can print a VT20 pass certificate on request.
You can book up to one calendar month before your current certificate expires without losing any of the remaining test period. The new certificate will run from the expiry date of the old one, not the date of the test, which is useful for fleet managers keeping vehicles on a consistent renewal schedule.
Please Note
We offer fixed-priced menu servicing via Bosch. These may be a better option than the manufacturer’s recommended service, which relies on you having always followed that service plan, so PLEASE do contact us to discuss. Either call 01242 861111 or use the email form, and we will get back to you.
Thanks,
Peter
