Class 7 MOT Test – Cheltenham

At Shire Cars, we offer Class 7 MOT testing in Cheltenham for light goods vehicles and vans. If your van or commercial vehicle is due its annual test, our DVSA-authorised test lane can accommodate vehicles up to 3,500kg design gross weight, with appointments available to minimise disruption to your working day.

What is a Class 7 MOT?

A Class 7 MOT is the annual roadworthiness test required by law for light goods vehicles and vans with a design gross weight between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg. Like all MOT tests, it is carried out by a DVSA-authorised tester and confirms that the vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards required for road use in the UK.

Vehicles that require a Class 7 MOT include:

  • Vans and light goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg
  • Panel vans, Luton vans and box vans within this weight range
  • Pick-up trucks and double-cab pick-ups within this weight range
  • Flatbed and dropside commercial vehicles within this weight range
  • Minibuses adapted primarily for goods carriage within this weight range

If your vehicle has a design gross weight of 3,000 kg or below, it falls under a Class 4 MOT rather than Class 7. If you are unsure which class applies to your vehicle, the figure is shown on the vehicle’s plate or in the V5C registration document under “Revenue Weight” or “Design Gross Weight”.

What does a Class 7 MOT check?

The Class 7 test covers the same core safety and emissions items as a Class 4 test, with additional checks relevant to commercial vehicles and load-carrying use. Our tester will inspect:

  • Brakes
Braking efficiency, condition of pads, discs or drums, brake lines and the parking brake.
  • Tyres and wheels
Tread depth, condition, correct load rating and fitment for the vehicle’s gross weight.
  • Lights
All external lighting, including headlights, indicators, reverse lights, brake lights, side marker lights and number plate lights.
  • Steering and suspension
Play, condition of joints, wheel bearings, shock absorbers and springs.
  • Exhaust and emissions
Exhaust integrity and emissions levels, including diesel smoke opacity for diesel-engined vehicles.
  • Seatbelts
Operation and condition of all fitted seatbelts.
  • Windscreen and wipers
Driver’s field of view, screen condition and wiper operation.
  • Horn
    Audibility and correct operation.
  • Fuel system
Security and condition of fuel tank, filler cap and lines.
  • Body and structure
Corrosion, sharp edges, load area security and condition of any load-securing equipment.
  • Number plates
Legibility and correct format, including any rear markings required for the vehicle type.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN) and manufacturer’s plate
Visible and consistent with the registration.
  • Speedometer
Present, visible and in working order.

Since May 2018, MOT results are categorised as Dangerous, Major, Minor or Advisory. A Dangerous or Major failure means the vehicle must not be used on the road until the relevant fault is repaired.

How to prepare your van for its Class 7 MOT

Commercial vehicles are often subject to heavier use than private cars. Before your test, it is worth checking:

  • All lights are working
Side marker and reverse lights are commonly overlooked on vans
  • Tyre tread depth and condition
Including the spare if one is fitted and legally required
  • Tyre load rating
Confirm tyres are rated for the vehicle’s gross weight
  • Windscreen washer fluid level
  • Number plates
    Clean, secure and legible
  • The load area is clear
Testers need to inspect the floor and load anchorage points
  • Any bulkhead or racking
Properly secured and not obstructing visibility
  • Dashboard warning lights
Are not illuminated, particularly the engine management light
  • The horn works
  • The manufacturer’s plate
(Showing gross vehicle weight) is present and legible

How long does a Class 7 MOT take?

A Class 7 MOT typically takes between 45 and 75 minutes depending on the vehicle’s configuration and condition. Larger or more complex vehicles, such as those with additional lighting rigs or specialist bodywork, may take a little longer. We will always let you know of any likely delays.

What happens if my van fails its Class 7 MOT?

A Major or Dangerous failure means the vehicle cannot be driven on the road until the identified faults are repaired, other than to drive directly to a pre-arranged repair appointment. We can advise on the work required and, in many cases, carry out repairs at our Cheltenham garage so you can get back on the road quickly.

If the vehicle is retested at our garage within 10 working days of the original test date and only the failed items are retested, a reduced retest fee may apply.
